Connections

An exhibition by the Creative Carers Collective

Free Space Project is delighted and honoured to announce their new exhibition ‘Connections’ presenting the works of The Creative Carers Collective. The Creative Carers Collective is an Art group for Carers based at Camden Carers Service. The group has been running since 2014 and provides a weekly space for Carers to embrace their creativity and experience some much-needed respite.

The collective has been on a real journey. In the early days, they met in a meeting room in Kentish Town. From the beginning, the collective was dynamic and ambitious. Their first exhibition took place in 2015 and they have held an annual exhibition ever since. For 5 years the Creative Carers Collective were based in a purpose-built Art studio in the Charlie Ratchford Centre in Chalk Farm. From this base, the group was able to create some fantastic artwork. At one point boasting up to 25 members, the connections formed in the group became strong and lasting.

Working alongside artist and tutor, Richard K Blades, the Creative Carers Collective have had their fair share of challenges. The biggest is the COVID-19 pandemic. In-person meetings and exhibitions became impossible so as ever, the group adapted to the situation. An early adopter of online meetings, the Creative Carers Collective flourished remotely and became particularly unified during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. The work produced during this time showed how important creativity was to its members and an online exhibition was held during Carers week of each year.

Each artist in the Creative Carers Collective has their unique style and voice and from the very beginning, it was the individual journey within the collective that mattered most. There are painters and poets, collage makers and photographers. Every form of creativity is welcomed.

The name of this exhibition ‘Connections ’is about the connections that the group has made and the ones they continue to make both online and in person. Raising awareness of Carers and caring has always been at the forefront of their exhibitions, showing Carers in a new light, as individuals, as artists, as a collective
