FSP Book Club

Burns Night - Wednesday 25th January 2023

I think we all have had that feeling of escapism with our heads deep in a book, finding it hard to put it down! Yet sometimes it feels so much easier to flick on the TV rather than pick out a good book. Sydney Timmins, writer and founder of the Mental Health Book Club Podcast, reveals her top mental health benefits of reading:

  • Reading is pleasurable

  • Reading can reduce stress

  • Reading can provide an escape from the 'real world'

  • Reading helps you develop empathy for others

  • Reading works your brain and prevents memory loss

  • Reading groups help to treat mental health issues

  • Reading can make you smarter

The team at FSP loves to discuss what we have all been reading so we wanted to share it with you too!

Antonia

Set in an alternate world and acclaimed for its psychological depth and realism, ‘The Watchmen’ comics have been a personal favourite for Artistic Director, Antonia. Being the only graphic novel to make Time’s 100 Best Novels list, one of Entertainment Weekly’s Top 50 novels of the past 25 years, the series is a world wide favourite. And who doesn’t love pictures in books?!

Maddie

Co-ordinator, Maddie is absorbed in another universe, exploring the traces of history of witchcraft overall asking ‘Why have societies all across the world feared witchcraft?’.  By delving into its contexts, beliefs and origins, Ronald Hutton traces the major historiographical developments of witchcraft from past ancient times to the present.

Grace

Despite being ‘THE’ book in lockdown 2020, Grace has just got her hands on ‘My Year of Rest and Relaxation’ by Ottessa Moshfegh. The novel follows an unnamed 20-something-year-old protagonist in New York City struggling with depression while trying to find her own identity.

There’s nothing like that page-turning power to get us through the winter blues!
