Free Space Project is delighted to present their newest exhibition with local artist, Tony Byers. Byers is a painter living in Kentish Town, North London. His work varies from abstract forms to blissful landscapes, capturing his passion for the medium. The exhibition unites just a handful of Byer’s paintings which fill his home walls.

Tony Byers began painting again after joining Free Space Project’s group Drawn Together. Drawn Together is a creative community using arts practices to support connection, explore ways of seeing, sensing and experiencing ourselves and one another, and deepening our curiosity. Byer became involved after joining the group in lock down one, seeking art as a respite during the difficult unprecedented covid period.

The experience Byers received whilst painting ‘felt like a medicine in itself’ he described. “As far as I remember, I was in a dark place. And after trying lots of different things… then I started painting. I realised that it was an answer to what I was lacking a purpose for. It made me happy”. Despite having no intentions of becoming an artist previously, Byers went on to paint outside the group’s programme, creating masses of art works depicting various subjects such as nature and emotion. “It took me, I had no choice in the matter”.

“I struggled for two years in the darkness and then I picked up a canvas and I felt the healing come from it and it became a medicine”
